Cover Letters: I Don't Do Them

I've always maintained that you never know where you'll be a week from today. Tomorrow, even. For me, I feel like life has silly ways of inspiring us to dream. Ways that make us think what if?

I'm walking through Kroger today and I pass this GQ magazine and my jaw drops. No, it isn't because it's Zac Efron on the cover. Not solely because Zac Efron is on the cover ;) I picked up the magazine and checked out the other pictures taken by Peggy Sirota I came home to check out her website and was so, so inspired. What if? I wrote a quick email to her that I wanted to share with you guys. Will she email me back? Will anything really come out of this? Maybe not. But truthfully, you never know until you try.

Hi Peggy,

I've been trying to think of some clever way to catch your eye right off the bat as I'm sure you have a very full inbox. I've never been that clever of a writer. So I'll just safely resort to what I do best. I'll be ME!

Funny how life works, actually. I make a trip to Kroger today, pass the latest issue of GQ, and now I'm writing you this. You see, I'm 22 and about to graduate from college in two shorts weeks. While I know I'm closing a chapter of my life soon, I can't help but feel like the world is truly at my feet now. The possibilities are endless. Dive in.

Peggy, I want you to know that I think your work is phenomenal. Last summer, I started my own photography business and I'm loving every minute of it. I've only barely dipped my toes in the water though. I'm always looking for more opportunities to learn and grow as a photographer.

Why am I writing you this? Well because if you ever needed help at a shoot, I'd book a flight out to the west coast in a heartbeat to be your man (but really, girl) I'd love to learn a thing or two from you.

Thank you for the inspiration. And thank you, dear god thank you to the moon and back, for those money shots of Zac Efron. Straight up eye candy.

It's too bad I don't see these girls more often, because they can seriously rock it out in front of my camera! I've literally been waiting for months to photograph these guys. For those who don't know, Riley and Chloe are my godmom Colleen's two girls. Since they live in DC, I don't get to see them nearly as much as I'd like. So when they came into town for Easter you already knooooow I was on top of that! Col - these have been a long time coming. I hope you love them. I, well I'm a bit obsessed with them and SO excited for you to see them ☺ Love you 3 (and Chris too!) to the moon and back times infinity.

It's moments like these that make me fall in love with photography all over again. This is totally one of those moments where I saw it as I was playing back through the images on my camera and literally got the chills. I won't lie, I'm so proud of this. Helloooo happiness overload!!! ☺

You might say we're like two peas in a pod. Some people even say we look alike. Pfffft, I don't know what those people are talking about! ☺

The truth is, all of my life I've had people say how lucky I am to be so close to my sister. I never once doubted it. I'm incredibly lucky. Although, it's easy when you have the most fantastic person in the world as your big sister. She's the one who did my makeup for junior prom, who took me out to an empty parking lot when I was 15 to teach me how to drive. Yes, these things may seem trivial. Honestly though, what makes them special is that they were with B. My big sis B.

Everyone who has known Beth at any level knows this: She's that person who makes everyone in the room smile a little bigger, breath a little easier, and laugh a little louder. That person that everyone loves to be around.

While I was in Boston visiting her for spring break, we went to Cambridge to see Harvard. I took some pictures of her that I happen to adore. B, you are the best and I so wish I could be with you, Mary, & Vanessa celebrating your birthday today! I hope you have the most fantastic birthday in the whole entire wooooorld! We're all thinking of you back home..... Nothing but love sis.

So this is my fabulous friend Caitlin! I met her in my first photography class freshman year here at IU. We've taken 4 photo classes together. Lots and lots of late nights at the photo lab spent together : ) Caitlin will be riding in the Little 500 for her fourth year, holler!!! Her bike is hot and I wanted to take her out and snag some shots of her. Love these. Oh and PS - comments make my day. Truly :o)

2. My guilty pleasure is listening to Delilah on the radio and I'm not ashamed of it.

4. I usually don't remember any of my dreams.

5. Before I die, I want to go to an Olympic Opening Ceremony.

6. When I'm laughing really hard, my nostrils flare and I look silly.

17. I went sky diving over the Swiss Alps. I jumped 2nd in a plane of 4.

19. I've got two big ol' dimples.

20. I'm really into green tea and marshmallow's right now. Not together or anything.

21. I love the food network. Love is an understatement.

22. I can crack my shoulders.

23. The most money I've ever won is $20 from a lottery ticket I bought from Safeway.

2008: A Year in Review

I'd consider myself a pretty sentimental person. You know... I cry easily and reflect on my life often. Last night I watched a rerun of this past season's american idol with my mom. At one point my ma and I glanced at each other after a segment and we were both balling. like babies. Now I know who i get this from! Only...I'm kidding, because I've known ALL along that I am a carbon copy of my mom in this way :o) love you mom and your BIG heart!

So much has happened in my life over the past year. I can remember surfing the internet this past january looking at all of these photo blogs and thinking, 'I want this! I can do this!' Now, one short year later, I have started a business I can call my own and I'm very proud of myself. I've learned that the sky is yours. Life can be all you imagined and more.

I'm immensely blessed and I try to never, ever lose sight of that. With the new year at our feet, I wanted to say THANK YOU!!! To my clients for giving me the opportunity to do what I love. Your trust in me to capture just a fragment of your lives is an honor. To my parents for your constant love, support, and wisdom! To my big brothers and sis, for making me look cool :o) but more importantly, for being some of my best friends. To Megan for being a mentor and a friend. To all other friends and family for being the driving force that you are!!! And to YOU, yes YOU, for sharing your time with me and reading my blog. Your cyber love and encouragement help keep that kick in my step!

Holiday Extravaganza: Blue Moon Revue featuring the digital art of Dark Eyes

As some of you know, I have 2 wickedly cool older brothers Colin & Dave. Colin is an insanely talented artist/painter and Dave is mad talented on guitar. Next saturday, December 20th at SPIN nightclub in Broadripple, they BOTH will be performing - Dave in his band Blue Moon Revue and Colin alongside with his LIVE digital art. you might notice a little something before the posts start on my blog, i named it the chirp! it's my blogging twitter :) it's just a way for me to share my thoughts and anything really. a lot of photo blogs that i read have twitter and i think it is so fun and engaging for those who visit the blog! so, enjoy :) and feel free to comment about the chirp! SPEAKING OF...i LOVE comments!!! they make my day, seriously. i was out with some friends the other night and ran into a friend i hadn't seen in so long and figured he didn't know about my photography. low and behold he has been to my blog several times :) this makes my heart swell a little, knowing there are people i don't know looking at my blog on a regular basis. leave some love, because i love you and i'd love to hear from you!

i wanted to take a quick second to wish vivian king a happy 5th birthday!!! gosh i can remember when vivian was born. i was a junior in high school, and here i am about to graduate from college! time fliiiiies. i have many warm and fuzzy memories of vivian, but one in particular that stands out. she was just a couple of months old and i was babysitting her in her first home. i remember it was around christmas time because the kings christmas tree was up. i held vivi for hours as we ooed and ahhed at the christmas tree. she was so smiley and lovey dovey (as us sullivans say). i think it was the first time i can remember making vivi smile. as vivi wrapped her tiny hand around my thumb, likewise she wrapped her tiny heart around mine. Life is Good. i wanted to make sure to send vivs a little cyber love since i could not be with her on her birthday. vivi thank you for being a friend. i hope you and your family are having a wonderful thanksgiving celebration in arizona! i love you to the moon and back

Almost That Time

whenever i get gloomy with the state of the world,

i think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow airport.

general opinion makes out that we live in a world of hatred and greed

i don't see that.

seems to me that love is everywhere.

often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy but it's there.

father and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives,

boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends.

when the planes hit the twin towers,

none of the phone calls from people on board were messages of hate or revenge,

they were all messages of love.

if you look for it, i've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around

What a NIIIICE family!! Oh my gosh, the Waughs were so fun to photograph :) They had a few beautiful spots scoped out to photograph at, and they were awesome!!! I had not photographed a family yet with 'kids' that were around my age (guess i'm not kid anymore!), so that was so much fun for me. Audrey and Grace were so sweet and fun! Roommate Like Mine

Kali and I went to the same high school. seeing as it was a a relatively small school, I knew her but wasn't friends with her. It's funny how things play out, though. All those doors that open each and every day, you truly never know what events can beautifully play out!

I never expected anything to come out of a 2D design class except paper cuts and gluey headaches from the amount of time spent pasting tiiiiiny little pieces together. It turns out Kali and I were in the same class. Of course we sat next to each other the first day! We didn't know anyone else :) but we became friends quickly and before you knew it we were planning a trip to Florence, Italy to study together for fall semester of 2007. There's a big door. Huge. A door that leads me to now. Right here where I'm sitting on my bum with a 101.7 temperature.

I came down with a fever during class today and came home, threw some PJS on, and hopped in bed. No help though really, way too hot and uncomfortable. That is until I heard a knock on my door. Kali walked in and said 'I made something for you'...

These are big words coming from Kali. Seriously. Kali is an AMAZING chef/cook/baker, you name it! She had made a tiny portion of warm gooey rice kripie treats. Oh i know, this isn't the typical remedy to a high fever. But it was that Kali went out of her way to cheer me up :o)

Don't you wish you had a roommate like mine? ;) In case you were wondering, Of course i ate them! Every last bit because it was delicious. While they may not have stunted my fever, they warmed my heart. I'm just reminded that my roommate is a fabulous, wonderful person. Inside and out. Love you Kali!

i'm 22 years old today! where did 21 go? i'm not really sure, but i'll happily welcome 22 : ) my roommate kali happens to be an unbelievable cook and has been cooking/baking food for me all day long. seriously, all day. she made tortellini ragu (my favorite from italy!) and a 'super- yummy-unreal-oh-my-god-this-isn't-right-brownie!' for dinner. yup, thats the name! and that isn't including the entire batch of rice krispie treats she made me earlier today. Heeeeeey, I didn't say it has been a nutritious day of eating. No way, not even close.

my WONDERFUL parents sent me beautiful flowers, and kali snapped this of me :) thank you mom and dad! i love you both to the moon and back!

For a handful of different reasons, I am abundantly happy right now. Namely, the success of my sister's back surgery earlier this morning. My mom called me only a few short hours after the procedure and asked me if I wanted to talk to a certain someone. You don't mean Beth do you?! She can't possibly be up and at it already! Next thing I hear is Beth's voice. Before I could ask her how she was feeling, she asks how I'M DOING. This doesn't even begin to speak adequate measures of my sister's character - someone who is always thinking of others before herself. She's the greatest and deserves all the happiness in the world, healthy back included :) I'd like to thank the stranger in boston for changing my sister's life. Love you B

In addition, I'm obviously ecstatic to see my name spreading!!! Just a few weekends ago, I photographed 3 bands at Rock the District in Carmel. These bands have been posting my work on their sites and awesomely giving me credit! I get such a rush seeing my name next to my work. But then to see people respond and react to it, whole different ball park. I love photography because i love to make people feel. In any case, knowing one more person has seen my work is so exciting for me. So, thank you to the rockin' bands for the shoutout. Rock on!

i've always loved photography.

ya know how people will say 'oh ever since i can remember...i've always loved to (insert X)' ? a few months back, i found myself sitting in our living room watching what us sullivans call a Family Antics video of christmas day 1990. i was 4. i always love to watch those videos because unfortunately, my memory doesn't always serve me so well. and, somehow, i always end up in tears. not because i'm sad, but because something funny has happened and i cry out of hysterics. not to boast, but us sullivan kids were pretty damn cute! and funny.

as i was 4, i feverishly opened my next present. a fisher price toy camera. 'OH MY GOD, I REMEMBER THAT THING!!!' that toy camera had hid itself somewhere in the depths of my memory in a file labeled coolest toys as a kid. barbie foam and my elmo stuffed animal were and still are close competitors.

i watched myself hold that big ol' clunky thing up to my eye. primary colors and all - it was as big as my head. inside, i felt my heart swell with all kinds of emotions: nostalgia, gratification, excitement, pride. i really have Always Loved Photography. and over the years, this love has manifest itself into a dream that i'm running after. i'm chasing away.

4 Hour Workweek is a DEFINITE read, go pick it up somewhere! It's more than inspirational.

...my dream is becoming a reality. i've got two shoots in the next week with Macabee and the McNamar kids, a workshop next month with one of the biggest, most influential wedding photographers in the business, and i'm second shooting with a super talented local photog at a wedding this weekend! so stay tuned for sneak peaks.

for now, i'll keep on runnin'...

so i just got back from our family vacation in the outer banks. it was sooo much fun, seriously if you and your family are ever looking for a fun, super relaxing vacation...look into going to the outer banks. i've been 4 times now and each time it gets better!

i knew i'd want to do a shoot there. beachyness and the ocean always make for beautiful pictures. so i took the 'rents out for an evening stroll. the sunlight was to die for, can i go back now please?! :)

a fresh new look

change is a good thing.

and i decided my blog needed some. a face lift if you will...so that it would appear fresher and more lively at first glance. after lots of time 'teaching' myself html code, i made some adjustments. and while it is still a work in progress, i'm really happy with the results. i think its more me! out with the black and in with the fresh white for real.

and a BIG thank you to my sister for snapping the shot of me at the top! after happening upon what might be one of the best props i've found to date for a shoot- a large, oozing with happiness rainbow beach umbrella - beth caught this sweet moment.

godparents have always played an important part in my life. while some aren't close with theirs, i consider myself the opposite. in my family, i'm known for having 'lucked out' in the godparents department. my godparents, rob and colleen, happen to be some of the greatest people around and i'm blessed to know them.

i don't get to see my godmom often as she lives in DC. so when we had the chance to make an extra stop to visit on our drive down to the outer banks for a family vacation, i was game! so we stopped by on saturday and spent the day with her family and had such a nice time. check out how beautiful her kids are, and i don't use that term lightly...

the STUNNING ms. riley we played the obligatory game of candyland and riley kicked our butts! my godmom took us out for an evening stroll to check out some of the sites. this one is one of my favorites - the korean war memorial me and my godmom, love you colleen <3

oh my goodness!!! can we say the best weekend ever? seriously.

thanks to NUVO, i was blessed to be able to cover the Indy Jazz Fest over the weekend. it started out that i was going solo, which was really no serious matter. as long as i have my camera close, i'm plenty entertained :) but, as luck would have it, i ended up going saturday night with my close friend lauren , a big time john legend fan who you've seen already here on the blog. john legend is one of those performers who is one million zillion times better live. and, he definitely isn't hard on the eyes...

...needless to say, we had a BLAST!!!!!!!

fun from car troubles?!

i think we all pretty much associate car troubles with probably the farthest from funness (that a real word? it is now!) but, not tonight! my dad and i had to kill some time after AAA told us it would take them 2.5 hours to make it out to tow our car!!! :/ so what did we do? took a stroll over to applebees, had some yummy food, and watched the the celtics/lakers game. PS yeeeee boston! and alas, FUN from car troubles. who would have thought?

it was so wonderful b/c, i don't get to spend nearly as much time with my dad as i'd like to. so, thanks dad for being the best! and, thank you 97 piece of crap honda for, yet again, overheating.

i took all of these with my NEW 50mm 1.4 lens, as my sister would say...'so smooth, 'slike butta!' :) love her!

my work is published!! since i've been interning with nuvo for a little over a month, they've had me cover all kinds of events. from biking stunts, to protests, to a moroccan hamam even! recently though, i've been covering food *which is not a bad gig, paid or not paid ;)* last week i had the awesome opportunity to shoot alongside jennifer litz , a food editor for nuvo, at Devour Downtown. i was totally pampered as i got to test all of the foods at each restaurant (i'm usually just taking the pictures!) so i had a suuuuuper happy tummy. in today's issue, they published a shot i got of the bangers & mash we sampled at the claddagh

nuvo is and continues to be an awesome learning experience and . tonight i'm swinging by a few places to grab some shots for their nightlife issue.

today has been exciting because, not only did i see the new Sex and the City movie and loved it, i also got my business cards! i made it a project for myself to design it on my own and i'm pumped with the turnout. i looooove the yummy lime color! take a look...what'ya think?

and on a side note, the crazy storm that tore through indianapolis two nights ago left this for us to see the next morning...

thank goodness that didn't plow through our roof! i saw lots of damage throughout the city yesterday. keeping those who are suffering from the effects of the storm in my thoughts and prayers.

and on a lighter note, happy sunday and have a wonderfully sunny first week of JUNE! :)

yesterday the 'rents and i spent the day with the king family. for those who may not know, i've known the kings pretty much since the womb. and there is something so comforting about spending time with them. everything just kind of makes sense. and i always have fun, always! yesterday was no exception. we had roast turkey, corn salsa, caesar salad for lunch. played the obligatory game of hide and seek afterwards. and then bookmarked the night with a little bit of peter pan :) these are summer days i absolutely love. here are a few of my favorite moments

that's ok, i didn't need dessert anyway. the good company was enough to sweeten my night :) we dined outside under the yummy summer sky and spoke of unspoken things. like avocados, the primaries, and why i could watch apollo 13 back to back. to back. among many other things.

my beautiful mama celebrated her birthday last wednesday. today i did a mini shoot of her. she was just outside playing in the sunshine, being her nurturing self as she watered her plants and took care of her gardens.

i love you, mama. i'm so happy you were born :)

growing up, i used to hear from loved ones 'oh i remember when you were a baby, you had the biggest eyes!' everyone has had this experience in some form or another. admittedly though, i've never really been on the opposite side of the conversation. recently though, i've found myself thinking these things about some little guys in my life who are so important to me...*gosh, does this mean i'm getting old? ;)*

here's little johnny. look at those gorgeous blue eyes! he is the youngest of three WONDERFUL children from my godfather and his wife. SOMEDAY, i'll say to him..."john, i remember when you were a baby! you had the prettiest blue eyes!!!" and alas, the cycle will continue.

johnny, i can't wait to watch you grow up little buddy :)

taking pictures is my favorite thing to do

i'm a very sentimental and contemplative person. i oftentimes look back fondly on the memories i have filed away in my mind. some memories are more vivid and recent - like the time last november when i flew through the air over the swiss alps, or how i got a dunkin donuts hot chocolate EVERY day when i went out to visit my sister in boston for spring break. some memories are fading a bit - the details i mean. i can't remember what my family did to celebrate my older brother dave's 23rd birthday, but I still look back on that time fondly. and some memories i rrrrrreally have to brush the dust off of. i sort of remember my 5th birthday party. i remember i got stung by a bee....wait, maybe i don't want to talk about that one ;)

i don't live in the past. i APPRECIATE the past. that's where photography comes into play.pictures of anyone and anything serve as a constant reminder of what is most important in my life: my family, my friends, and loved ones. so much of what i photograph isn't seen by others. ever since i got back from spending a semester in florence, italy and traveling throughout europe, i have since vowed to show some others what i like to see through the viewfinder. i've got to start somewhere. this place looks pretty good
